Garden of Stones (1989)
Duration - 12 min.
Garden of Stones for Orchestra
Trace the path of death in your life, from the distant names in stone whose candle you imagine you hold in silent proof of human remembrance, to the place where it first touches and turns cold the very core of meaning in your life. Grief takes hold as the inexorable, grinding rotation of a great stone sphere; with the first awful tearing of its huge rumbling mass our lives are lost to the crushing forces of fate and the turning Earth itself.
Yet, in a sudden moment of stillness it will be revealed to us that even this awesomeness is transformed into something small and personal: a touchstone bearing the memory of unbearable sorrow and loss--a talisman that we shape and warm with our holding. We seal the howling void into pebbles in our pockets, carry them into the world to name and protect us, and sadly leave the garden of our childhood.
