The Trouble with the Wind (1991)
1. The Trouble with the Wind
2. Walk the River
3. Take it on the Chin
The Trouble With the Wind was written in 1990 for the Black Swamp Saxophone Quartet. Although there is no specific programmatic content, there is an underlying sense of anger and sarcasm, sometimes playful, sometimes bordering on grotesque caricature. The first movement rushes around until it blows itself out, the arching melody of the second is finally pulled down by its own weight, and the third movement becomes combative, taking swipes at the air and flinging epithets until it can't help being a little ridiculous.
