Upper Midwestern Apologia (1992)
Duration 12 minutes 38 seconds
Program Notes: Upper Midwestern Apologia for tape Evan Chambers
I grew up in Ohio, and Keith Taylor's poem Upper Midwestern Apologia seemed to capture a sense of the unique and often maligned beauty of the northern midwestern United States; a beauty that is increasingly being destroyed. Rather than attempt to translate directly the effect of the poem into music, I have woven sounds around the poet's voice in the hope of revealing the confluence of the words and the music: the colors, shapes, textures and seasons of the land, and a shared love for the forests, fields, dunes, and waters of this part of the world. The work was created using acoustic sound sources that were processed using digital effects and traditional analog means, including intensive tape manipulation. The entire composition was generated from recordings of the following: the poet's voice, two long tones on the viola, a wood block, a clay flute, and single note from a kalimba.
